Job Description

This role involves skilled maintenance and repair of all Public Works Department vehicles and equipment, as well as the upkeep of the Town garage. The mechanic works under the general supervision of the Superintendent and Highway Division Foreman, with significant autonomy in decision-making regarding vehicle maintenance and repairs.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform skilled repairs and maintenance on gasoline and diesel engines, including engine overhauls, brake and suspension work, electrical system repairs, and clutch replacements
  • Operate and document a preventive maintenance program, keeping detailed records of all work performed on vehicles and equipment
  • Repair power equipment and tools such as compressors, jackhammers, and mowers.
  • Order and manage parts inventory, prepare and maintain repair records, and assist in developing vehicle specifications
  • Operate vehicles for snow removal and sanding during winter, plowing, and perform emergency highway operations as needed.
  • Ensure safe practices in vehicle servicing, maintain a daily log of activities, and update the DPW Computer Maintenance and Management System
